Malaysia Sets Registration Rules for Major Online Platforms

(MENAFN) Malaysia revealed on Monday that digital messaging applications and social networking platforms operating in the country with a user base of 8 million or more will be required to formally register by Jan. 1.

In an official announcement, the nation’s Communications and Multimedia Commission explained that the policy is designed to make sure major digital service operators function in accordance with Malaysia’s existing laws and regulatory standards.

The commission clarified that the enforcement of this deeming requirement will cover well-known platforms such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, as reported by a media outlet.

“This initiative also ensures that all platforms involved bear clearer responsibility for user safety, particularly in safeguarding children and families,” the commission also said.

Authorities further emphasized that the regulation would not disrupt the worldwide operations of these companies, noting that the strategy is consistent with international approaches used to oversee large-scale online platforms.

Separately, last month Malaysian Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil stated that the government plans to introduce a social media restriction for children under the age of 16, with the measure expected to take effect beginning in 2026.
